It has been an eventful couple of days in the world of MTG Commander with the updates to the format Banlist from the Commander Rules Committee. It has sparked a lot of discussion online, some of which has been enlightening and helpful.

I (Nick) did some research into what this means for our Sanctioned Commander Events. Because Commander is a casual format and our Sanctioned events are Casual Rules Enforcement Level, we have the option of continuing to allow banned cards in the format. The onlly stipulation is that before the start of a game, the players should have a “Rule 0” discussion about what they expect and want from a game, as well as which cards are allowed in the game. Fortunately, the majority of our community already does this. So, since “Rule 0” discussions and agreements are part of a Casual REL event, we have decided to continue allowing banned cards to be played, so long as your play group agrees to it. If there are any objections, you will need to either swap in different cards, or join a different game.

The only cards we will not allow are counterfeits (commonly known as “proxies”) or Gold-bordered cards. The only “proxy” cards allowed in Sanctioned play are ones issued by the head judge or TO; these will only be issued for cards that would considered marked either due to damage or curling.

Thank you all for your understanding.

Nick
